Orange Sweet Rolls

…perfect for breakfast with family

I recently had Lasik eye surgery (10/10 would recommend by the way), and I asked my aunt and uncle what sweet treat I could bring over as a thank you for watching my son and taking care of me as I recovered. My uncle asked for something that gives dreamsicle vibes. Not only do these sweet rolls pack a punch of orange, they also deliver on the sweet delicate cream cheese icing. Hope you enjoy this recipe as much as my family does!

Equipment

For the sweet rolls

  • 1/2 cup warm milk

  • 1/2 cup orange juice

  • 1 tablespoon dry instant yeast

  • 1 tbsp brown sugar

  • 1 large egg

  • 3 cups flour

For the cinnamon filling

  • 1 stick of butter softened

  • 1/2 cup white sugar

  • 1/2 cup brown sugar

  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon

For the cream cheese icing

  • 1 block of softened cream cheese

  • 2 tbsp orange juice

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla

  • 1 cup powdered sugar

  • 1 tsp orange zest

How to create this tasty cast iron dessert

  • Preheat oven to 350F

  • To create your dough, you’re going to warm up your milk until warm to the touch, but not hot.

  • Add in your yeast and allow to bloom for about 5 minutes

  • Next, add in your orange juice, sugar, egg and flour

  • Allow the dough to rest and rise in a warm place for an hour (make sure the dough is covered so it does not become dry)

  • After it’s doubled in size, roll out your dough on a floured surface and add in your filling (brown sugar, butter and cinnamon mixture)

  • Spread your filling evenly reaching almost the edge of all sides

  • Using a pizza cutter or a knife, cut your rolls vertically or you can roll your dough and then slice using floss, but I find just using a knife or pizza cutter works best

  • I made my cuts extra thick yielding 6 large sweet rolls, but you can make yours skinnier and making more rolls

  • Spray your dish with cooking spray and arrange the rolls in the pan

  • Allow the rolls to rise one more time for about 30 minutes until puffy

  • Bake in the oven at 350F for 25-30 minutes or just until the tops of the rolls become lightly golden brown

  • Next, get started on your icing - cream together cream cheese, powdered sugar, vanilla, OJ and zest until fully combined and creamy

  • Once your rolls are done, generously glaze the tops with the cream cheese icing.

  • If you do not devour all of the rolls in one sitting, place in the refrigerator covered until ready to enjoy for round two!
